Off We Go!

We started our day early in the morning arriving at the middle school at 4:00 in the morning. Everyone climbed on the bus with their luggage, groggy but ready for the day. Unfortunately we broke our promise with Mr. Daly as he was left with a box of doughnuts in the Bahamas once again.

Our first flight to Atlanta, Georgia went by quickly and before we knew it we were there and quickly moving through the Atlanta airport to our next flight to Nassau, Bahamas. We got there just in time for boarding. After struggling to find our seats at the beginning, or as the flight attendant said “our little party in the back of the plane”, we were back up in the air headed to the beautiful Bahamas. Between different airports our numbering system (counting off) was improving tremendously. We are confident that by the time we come back we will have it down… maybe.

Finally arriving at Nassau was a gracious sight for us all, for some it was their first time flying out of the country. The group’s first steps were towards the immigration zone where we had to fill out a questionnaire of our travels to the Islands of the Bahamas. After that the hunger began to finally hit us and we hurried our way towards the closest food source which happened to be a Wendy’s. Everyone was able to find something to eat that would hold them off till dinner at the Island School. Our next flight wasn’t for another hour or so which led to the class enjoying themselves on a balcony at the airport. When it reached 4:00pm we began to board with anxious excitement in going further on our journey.

Arriving at the Rock Sound airport we met Liz and Pat who drove us back to the Island School. Everyone was really excited and could not wait to get to the school. After a 30 minute drive our dream had come true and we found ourselves at the Island School. We had a lot to do during our first night. Before preparing for dinner we quickly dropped our bags off and became familiar with our dorms. Next we walked over to the dining hall where we were cleaned plates and set up dinner which was suitable for everyone. After dinner we had our second job which was cleaning the dining hall. We walked over to the presentation room where we did our first opening activities to become familiar with everyone and the place. During the presentation we were given a brief summary of what our typical day would look like. After the presentation we were able to call home and let our families know that travels went well and we were excited. Later that evening we came back to the dorms, settled down and hung out with the class. We had our first quiz on what we learned about the Island School which seemed successful to everyone. As the night grew on we began to find ourselves heading off to bed in preparation for the BIG morning. We are so excited for the rest of the trip!
